A new study in the journal “Biological Medicine” has shown that finasteride, the active ingredient in Proscar, is more effective at lowering prostate cancer risk than finasteride alone. A randomized, double-blind study has found that the 5-year, randomised trial showed that Proscar users showed a significantly greater reduction in overall prostate cancer risk when compared to those who took finasteride alone. However, the study also showed that Proscar users were more likely to have had a new type of cancer than those taking finasteride.

Finasteride, also known as Proscar, is a type of 5-alpha reductase inhibitor that is primarily used for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), an enlargement of the prostate gland. However, some people who have BPH also have prostate cancer. In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, participants with a history of prostate cancer, BPH, or any other disease who were either taking Proscar or Proscar users were randomly assigned to receive either finasteride 1mg daily (Proscar) or placebo pills for three years. The primary end point of the study was the change from baseline in a composite measure of overall prostate cancer risk.

The results of the study, published in the journal Biosciences, found that participants taking Proscar showed a greater reduction in overall prostate cancer risk than those who took the placebo pills. The Proscar users had a slightly higher increase in the incidence of prostate cancer than those who took the placebo pills.

This may be because the Proscar users had better prognosis than those taking placebo. However, the Proscar users had a lower risk of developing prostate cancer, the researchers say. These results are encouraging because they suggest that finasteride may be a more effective treatment option for the BPH population that may benefit from it.

In addition, a previous study, published in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Oncology, found that Proscar users had a slightly greater reduction in overall prostate cancer risk. The researchers also found that patients who used Proscar had a significantly lower risk of developing prostate cancer. They suggest that this may be because more of these users have a higher likelihood of developing prostate cancer.

“Our results support the use of Proscar as an initial therapy for the treatment of BPH, and may offer new hope for patients considering this treatment option as a potential treatment option for their enlarged prostate,” said study author Dr. Andrew Thompson, MD, the lead author of the study.

Dr. Thompson added, “As we progress to understanding the potential benefits of finasteride for the BPH treatment, we will continue to monitor and study the results and assess how patients respond to this new treatment strategy.”

The study, which was led by Professor Charles M. Schmitt, PhD, of Harvard Medical School, enrolled more than 4,100 men with prostate cancer between January 2010 and December 2018. The trial was designed to measure the effects of the drug on the risk of developing prostate cancer. Researchers also studied patients with both BPH and prostate cancer who received Proscar 1mg daily for three years. The results showed that men who took the drug had a slightly higher risk of developing prostate cancer. The researchers say that these findings may have important implications for the development of prostate cancer in men who take Proscar.

The new study was published in the journal Biosciences in July 2018.

Schmitt was supported by the National Institutes of Health and was co-led by the National Cancer Institute.

The authors of the study were not involved in the design of the trial or in its collection, distribution, or dissemination of data.

The results of the study were published in the journal. Additional research is needed to confirm the findings of the study, to assess the effect of finasteride on the risk of developing prostate cancer, and to assess the benefits of Proscar in men who have both BPH and prostate cancer.

Finasteride is a synthetic 4-AR-type 5-alpha reductase inhibitor used to reduce hair loss in men with thinning hair on the scalp. Finasteride works by blocking the production of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that causes hair loss. This increases the risk of prostate cancer and bladder cancer. Finasteride has also been shown to be effective in preventing hair loss in men with mild to moderate hypogonadism (low testosterone) and in men with vertex hair loss. Finasteride is available in a number of dosages such as 5mg, 10mg, and 20mg tablets. Inactive tablets are taken whole with a drink of water to avoid stomach upset. Finasteride is also used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) by relaxing the bladder and prostate muscles. If you are taking any medications, be sure to inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are currently taking.

Side Effects of Propecia:

How does Propecia work?

Propecia works by blocking the production of a male hormone that causes hair loss. This hormone causes a decrease in the production of a male hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Lower levels of DHT help to stop hair loss and promote new hair growth. Propecia is only effective for men with male pattern baldness. It is taken once a day, and the drug should not be combined with another hair loss treatment, such as minoxidil, as it can cause hair loss in males. If you have taken Propecia, discuss with your healthcare provider how this medication may affect your health.

What are the potential side effects of Propecia?

Common side effects of Propecia can include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Elevated levels of semen
  • Ejaculation disorders
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Testicular pain
  • Mood changes

If you experience these side effects, talk with your healthcare provider, as they can determine if Propecia is an appropriate treatment for you. They may also recommend that you discontinue use of Propecia or talk to your healthcare provider if you experience any side effects.

In rare cases, Propecia may cause liver damage if you are taking certain medications. In these cases, your healthcare provider may recommend that you stop use of this medication.
